I have been on vacation the last couple of weeks so I am writing this column while at the Pinery Provincial Park near Grand Bend, where I am camping with my family and some friends.
Our days have been filled with the usual camping fare – hotdogs, s’mores, beer and chips. Lots of temptations around, but I have managed to stay on track and be very careful when splurging.
While I was out for a run one morning with my friend, I saw a group of six adults jogging around the campground with their kids riding along on bikes. It was great to see and reminded me that you can have fun and stay fit and healthy while camping.
There are lots of ways to stay active, but here are a few you can do on your own or with your family at most campgrounds.
Go for a hike. This is a great calorie burner and way to keep the kids busy and entertained. Kids need 60 minutes of physical activity every day
Use a pedometer to track your steps throughout the day. Those who take an average of 10,000 steps per day are able to lose weight and stay healthy.
Rent a canoe or kayak and head out on the water.
Rent a bike or bring your bike. Parks have great trails and roads.
Go for a swim. The beach at the Pinery has got to be one of the best around. Swimming is a great low impact way to burn calories without any impact on your joints
My favourite is going for a jog. I like to challenge myself while hitting some unknown trails and push through some of the hills and valleys.
Play just about any sport with your kids or just be silly and play tag.
Calories are very easy to consume when you are sitting around the campsite. I have two suggestions for this.
First, minimize the time you are sitting so you’re not tempted.
Secondly, show the discipline you would at home. I have done my best to keep up with my food journal while I am away. It has been a great way to remind me how easy it is to go over my calories for the day.
I am happy to report that I have lost an average of two pounds each week I have been on vacation.
Amazingly to some, I have still had a great time and been able to get some much needed R & R. I don’t think I have been a ‘downer’ on anyone’s vacation.
Regardless of where you are at this summer you can stay active and have fun.
