For the longest time I had this impression of what yoga was and was not. About five years ago, I took my first class and it wasn’t at all what I expected. I can’t think of anyone who would not benefit from taking a yoga class from a professionally trained instructor.
Romano Formicuccia, from the Walkerville Yoga Loft (walkervilleyogaloft.com), says yoga instructors must be part of the Yoga Alliance. This group ensures that teachers maintain a high level of expertise and have passed a comprehensive certification process.
There are numerous misconceptions about yoga. Some of the more popular ones are:
There will be chanting and lots of meditation: Most yoga classes don’t place an emphasis on this and it’s not a common way to teach yoga.
It’s not a workout: All you need to do is take one class and you’ll see immediately. Yoga can be a very physical workout and it’s very common to see people coming out of class drenched in sweat.
You need to be able to bend into a pretzel: Being flexible is not a requirement. Yoga will help in this area but you don’t need to be overly flexible to take a class.
Romano has some great tips for anyone who’s considering taking a yoga class for the first time:
. Arrive with an open mind.
. Wear comfortable clothes.
. Bring water.
. Bring a yoga mat. Most yoga studios will have loaner mats if you forget.
. Arrive at least 10 minutes early and meet the instructor to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
. Do the class at your own pace. During your first few classes there are some positions that may be uncomfortable for you. The child’s pose is a common position that’s suggested to people at their first class.
There are many different types of yoga classes. Make sure you find a class that meets your experience and comfort level. And a great instructor can make or break a class. The great ones will introduce themselves to any new students.
Romano says athletes can see some of the best results. In recent years, pro golfer Fred Couples said yoga has played a major role in allowing him to play at a high level. Romano has worked with NHL players over the years and they firmly believe in the benefits.
Yoga will complement any form of exercise or activity you’re doing. If you are inactive, then yoga just might be the key to getting you healthy again.
